The Ridegefield area was first settled by Europeans in 1708, when settlers from nearby Norwalk and Milford purchased the land from the Ramapo Native Americans; Ridgefield was incorporated a year later. The town was the site of the famous Battle of Ridgefield in 1777, during which Generals David Wooster and Benedict Arnold faced a large British force. Ridgefield was historically a farming community, but became a popular summer retreat for wealthy New Yorkers once it became accessible via railroad.
Today, Ridgefield covers 35 square miles and is home to a population of 24,638. Some of its most notable locations include the Keeler Tavern Museum, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, and the Ridgefield Playhouse. The town's annual Nutmeg Festival has been held since 1906, when it began as a fundraising project.
